the Mar Menor (or little sea) is Europe’s largest salt water lagoon, separated
from the Mediterranean by the 24 km long narrow strip of land known simply as
‘La Manga’. At a maximum of 7m deep, the warm, shallow waters of the Mar Menor
provide a calm haven for swimmers of all ages and a paradise for all types of
water sports enthusiasts – especially sailing, diving, windsurfing and kite
surfing. There are of course a wealth of excellent local golf courses (with many
more on the way) and numerous wildlife conservation areas with opportunities to
go walking, mountain biking, horse riding and climbing. The region’s historical
and architectural heritage has also been carefully preserved, especially in the
nearby cities of Cartagena and Murcia which are both well worth a visit. Unlike
the other Spanish Costa Calida, The land here is mainly zoned for agriculture
with a low overall population for its size. Los Urrutias itself is a small
coastal village surrounded by fields. Slowly being developed, its amenities
include a supermarket, chemist, newsagent and a range of small bars/restaurants.
